French-Canadian mill town of Edmundston, in the northwest corner of New Brunswick, is the capital of what its inhabitants call, for lack of a better name, "The Republic of Madawaska". . . . [Fn.] So named in the early 1800s by the first settlers of Madawaska county who found themselves virtually isolated from--and ignored by--the government of New Brunswick.
